Introduction
One of the tasks you will find useful for school work is to be able to upload and download documents from the "cloud". In this Quest you will create an external document, and learn to upload it to Google Drive, then download the file from the Drive, and finally, to know how to print it directly from the Google "Cloud" (another name for Google's server). Drive on!
Steps:
1. Go to the following website and find a poem that you like by Bruce Lansky. www.gigglepoetry.com
1. Go to the following website and find a poem that you like by Bruce Lansky. www.gigglepoetry.com
- Click on Hundreds of Poems to Read and Rate, find one you like, then copy and paste your favorite Bruce Lansky poem into a new word document. Most likely this will be Microsoft Word or Open Office. Also copy the URL (website) to the page the poem is on and paste that in your document as well. Save the file in your computers folder as poem.
- CRIME ALERT!!! STOP!!! What about copyright?
I'm so glad you thought about this (:>).This poem doesn't belong to you and you copied the entire poem! The poem even states it is subject to copyright which means you SHOULD NOT copy it without permission. So why did we tell you to copy it? Our Agency has received permission from Meadowbrook Press and Mr. Lansky to allow you to copy it for educational use. However, you still need to cite it properly to give proper credit to the author, and provide a link back to the Giggle Poetry web site. You will learn how to do this in the next Quest, so remember how you got to your favorite poem.
2. Practice uploading a document to Google Drive
This step is similar to how you would upload any file to the "cloud" (Google's server) so you can access it anywhere that there is an Internet connection.
3. Practice downloading a document from Google Drive
4. Note that it is also possible to print documents from google drive in the file drop down list.
You have now completed quest 2 you will use the files you have uploaded and downloaded in the next quest.
This step is similar to how you would upload any file to the "cloud" (Google's server) so you can access it anywhere that there is an Internet connection.
- To upload a file to Google Drive, click on the red button next to CREATE shown here (when you are logged in). This will give you a menu to choose from to locate your file or folder you want to upload.
3. Practice downloading a document from Google Drive
- This process is how you would download a file from the "cloud" (Google's server) so you can save it to use when you do not have access to the Internet. A good place to save it may be on a flash drive so it is still portable, or your File Space.
- Open your rain of leaves file
- To download a file, click on FILE, then DOWNLOAD AS, and choose the filetype .pdf. You will notice you have other choices as well for different types of files (MS Word = .doc, Open Office = .odt, Adobe portable document format = .pdf). There are different ways this file may download, depending on the computing equipment you are using.
- If you are using the Google Chrome browser click on the bottom right hand corner where it says "SHOW ALL DOWNLOADS", then click on SHOW IN FOLDER. This shows you the location that the file automatically downloaded to. If you cannot remember this, copy the file and paste it where you know you can find it again.
4. Note that it is also possible to print documents from google drive in the file drop down list.
You have now completed quest 2 you will use the files you have uploaded and downloaded in the next quest.
