Q6 Passwords and Usernames
Briefing
There are two sections to this Quest. The first part explores passwords and the second part looks at usernames. It is critical to have safe and secure usernames and passwords.
Judgement call
This is a judgement challenge. Check with your teacher and discuss the following with your class and/or group of friends.Watch the following video from NetSmartz.org. Broken Friendship is about a teen that gives her best friend's password to some other girls.
Copy the following questions into your evidence document and answer them.
1.Your best friend asks for your password to log into your social network site for just a minute so they can check something they heard about. What would you say?
2. Would you create (or have you already) a username that sounds sexy or tries to get attention from others?
3. Have you seen someone do something that seems stupid to you and you immediately sent a text message to others about it?
Passwords
It is very important that you keep your passwords safe and protected as you learned in the video Broken Friendships. We do know that you will be creating many accounts when you are participating in the 21 Things4Students Missions and Quests.
CAUTION:It is a good practice not to use as part of your password your birth date, social security number, address, phone number, pet names, and other names that are meaningful to you. A good password would have 8 or more characters with a combination of upper and lower case, numbers and punctuation symbols.
2. On the About.com Guide Internet for Beginners web site, Paul Gil outlines 5 Steps to a Good Password to deter hacking.
3. Below are some examples of what good passwords look like from Paul Gil's About, com Guide website. See how they progress from OK, to Better, to Excellent. Click on the link to see more examples.
