Key Vocabulary:
search engine: a computer program that is used to look for information on the Internet
database: a collection of pieces of information that is organized and used on a computer
Steps:
1. You have learned how to search Mel.org and Google. Watch the following video on a search engine like Google and a credible database in Mel. You will learn about the differences to make a decision on which one to use when you are doing your research. Database versus Google
2. Now you are going to do a search on either a topic you would like to know more about or one that your teacher has selected for you. You will evaluate the resources you have found in order to determine if your information is accurate and up-to-date.
3. The resources can be from a search engine such as Google and could include a blog, wiki and website. You will also choose a database from Mel.org and find at least two resources and include them in your evaluation. If you would like the articles to be read to you, downloaded to mp3 or translated to a different language many of the databases in MeL have the capability to do so. If you see the following next to an article try them out.
If an article does not have an option to be read aloud use Vozme an online tool that allows the user to copy and paste text into it. It will read the text aloud on the Vozme site or you can download the text as an mp3 to be listened to on another device. Many devices and computers also have built-in tools that will read text aloud if you prefer to listen to the article.
